Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
